Surprise, Surprise

Presidencies are all about surprises.

The surprises fast overcome the campaign promises and circumstances or, in this case, ignorant boasts.

Harry Truman had no idea the Soviets would blockade Berlin.

He was as surprised as everyone when the North Koreans crosed the 38th Parallel in June 1950.

Dwight Eisenhower was surprised in 1954 when his new chief justice, Earl Warren, fashioned a 9-0 ruling called Brown v. Board of Education.

LBJ surprisingly learned he was “waist deep in the Big Muddy” when the water rose during the Tet Offensive.

Jimmy Carter became president in 1977, little expecting the end of his presidency loomed in the late 1979 Iranian hostage surprise.

Did Reagan know he had incipient Alzheimer’s while he was president? Maybe. Did Nancy? Probably. Did we? No surprise there, we did not.

On that famous 9/11 President Bush read to a grade school class when the WTC came down. Now that – that was a surprise.

Then, one last surprise for W., the 2008 depression as his presidency crashed one last time.

Now, the surprise is on us as this foul regime careens from its self-made crises, or those no one saw coming like an infection across the historically cancerous Middle East.

Notwithstanding every thing the man has said and done, there is surprise each day in the despotism, ignorance, stupidity, racism, madness and cruelty of the regime as it spreads like an eradicable fungus from its baroque guilded oval whore-house office o’er the land.

Every day brings further surprise – above all surprise as to how much, how quickly, 236 years can unravel in this despotic, ignorant, brittle breaking apart of America.

It is like picking up an old brick to find, surprisingly unsurprisingly, it is crumbling to dust in your hand.
