It Can Happen – Again

You can and could say anything and everything and you don’t know when, how or where to stop because the wickedness, ignorance and pure evil are everywhere all day long, manifest all the time.

It is enough to say that this man in the White House with the regime he and his henchmen have concocted is the worst thing ever to happen to and in the United States of America – even including the Civil War.

The Civil War had a political and moral purpose that moved the arc of human decency and progress in preserving the union while dissolving slavery in the U.S.

It ended de jure slavery though not its economic, social, and moral degeneracy. The 13th Amendment could not and has not dissolved Jim Crow and the abiding racism in America that persists with abundant evidence that this is the Jim Crow Trump regime, intent on turning the clock back to pre-Civil Rights and pre-Voting Rights Act times.

Indeed, if it could, the Trump regime would restore slavery. Have no doubt. It would. It is a slavers’ regime in which Trump regards the United States as his plantation and anyone other than some white northern Europeans and their stock here as inferior.

In 1861 we were a nation of 30 million – 20 million in the north, 10 million in the south including, think of it, 4 million slaves. Today  we are a nation of 340 million. It is a different, harder time now than when blue fought grey.

More than 40 million are black Americans. It is recorded that during WWII 130,000 black Americans were among the more than 1 million American troops waiting in England for D-Day. In England they were welcomed and treated as equals while in the U.S. Army they were kept apart by segregation and white Americans’ hatred and instinctive and learned bigotry.

White soldiers of the 101st Airborne Divison, the “Screaming Eagles,” the “Band of Brothers” divison, received a cordial visit from General Dwight D. Eisenhower on the eve of their jump into Normany on June 6, 1944. The black troops waiting in England to go over never had a visit from Ike, the Supreme Allied Commander. Never.

None of them nor their counterparts in the Navy or those of color serving in the PTO ever received a congressional Medal of Honor until six decades after the war, though many were earned:

Many earned them, starting with Mess Attendant Doris “Dorie” Miller at Pearl Harbor, when this Navy cook aboard the USS Battleship West Virginia siezed an abandoned shipboard machine gun and under enemy fire shot down at least two Japanese planes. History records that Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox opposed any combat roles for black sailors and opposed a CMH for Miller.

Black men in the Navy then were consigned to service as cooks and messmen. Miller, after Pearl Harbor, was awarded the Navy Cross, the first black sailor ever to receive the medal, the Navy’s highest. After Pearl Harbor he was promoted mess attendant second class and once again sent to serve in the kitchens and officers’ mess aboard the ships on which he served. Promoted once more, Miller died in combat in 1943 – as a cook 3rd class.

Do you think Commander in Chief Bone Spurs knows this? That’s a rhetorical question. These things are not mentioned casually or to guild a lily. A commander in chief should know them, should want to know them. This one knows nothing.

“Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, who knew” blurted Trump during his first term. Who knew? All of us knew but not this president of the woebegone ignorant – of Mencken’s “Species Boobus Americanus.”

We have within the population the highest percentage of foreign born in over a century, 17 percent of us. That’s why uneducated white America votes Maga. It hates and fears who it does not know – and those hates and fears are fed by Trump and his crew of Maga maggots:Miller, Hegseth, Vance, Bondi, Patel, Bove, Noem, Kennedy, Vought, Pierro, Leavit, and Homan, the thug who runs human roundups by masked marauders.

With homage to Dickens, it is the worst and still worser times, the most desperate time in American history – subsumed in a history and myth of nationhood abandoned by an entire political party, and by the extreme right wing faction of the SCOTUS in service to Trump, his minions and their nihilistic campaign of destruction.

The day after right now, 100 years from now – wherever time takes and has taken us – nothing withstands the hard truth that they are bent on destroying progress, any and all progress made in the past 249  years in and by this country. Their inevitable purpose?  To destroy any and all progress in every field of human thought and endeavor, scuttling the United States on the wreckage of history.

Washington, Lincoln, FDR. Greatness from time to time, though hardly ever and very rarely, is bestowed on the office of the president, gifted to but a few by the exigencies of the moment, and their innate ability to meet and face hardship and lead a nation.

This, this time, is as opposite such a period as it is possible to imagine, much less live through or even begin to see through opaquley to what lies beyond.

Never before and not until now have we had a president who is and demonstrates every day that he is mentally deranged, morally unfit, stupendously ignorant, grotesquely vengeful, and vigorously evil.

One who surrounds himself as have the worst men in history with the dregs of a society, dressed like carbon copies of his hate, hates and hatred for the American Constitution, the laws it has bequeathed heretofore, of knowledge, and more than two centuries of progress across every field of human endeavor.

We are being destroyed from within but because we are indeed so much a civil  society with civilized belief in democracy, in OUR democracy we think this can be righted at the polls and in the courts.

It may be that it can be short of overt civil war; or that it can’t be and that already it is too late. But that we are in a civil war is beyond dispute albeit so far confined to protest and the courts. That we are reaching a constitutional crisis is not so. Why? Becase we are in one now. We are long since in one.

If there are elections in 2026 and 2028, if we see a sea change in those votes signalling definitevely that a clear majority of Americans understand all this and aim to stop it then they must also know this:

There can be no reconciliation with it, not now, not later, not ever.

The century has been surrendered by these creatures, make no mistake there. It took 249 years to get to January 2025 and to achieving the most prominent place in the contemporary life and history of the planet since Rome. That has been devastated in 7 months.

Whatever has to be done to punish its instigators and perpetrators and to assure it never happens again must be done or we will have to tell Sinclair Lews not only can it happen here, it can happen again.
